Hi I'm Maud. As an artist I'm passionate about drawing people.
I use mostly charcoal and collage to explore human strength & vulnerability, human relationships and the relationship with the outside world.
Although the distinction between drawing and painting sometimes blurs due to the way I use and combine my materials, I enjoy working with charcoal because I appreciate its pure simplicity.
Raised by a mother who meticulously sewed the most beautiful outfits for me and could solve every problem, McGuyver-style, with a paperclip and a rubber band, and by a father who worked in the graphics industry before computers arrived, I inherited a love for creating. Meanwhile, my friends and I starred in our own A-Team stories and performed in costume between the sliding doors at home.
I still bring all of this into the world through my work: play, exploring roles, some graphic influences and problem-solving along the way.
In my studio, I surround myself with vintage toys, masks, old sewing patterns, wood type letters, texts, and all sorts of little treasures. This also includes some inspiring creations by my son, whose growing up is never far away in my work.
My work is figurative and I strive for expression rather than photorealism. My markmaking strong without idealizing the image. This may include a piercing stare or messy hair. Alienating or nostalgic elements such as masks and vintage toys, as references to my childhood, increasingly find their way onto the paper. Rather than just being pleasing on the eye, I prefer my work to raise questions and perhaps touch someone in the process.
My work is for sale and I'm also available for commissions. Feel free tot contact me for inquiries about my work or for a studio visit. The easiest way to stay informed is through my instagram account.
